FOREWARD This little treatise is part of a longer work which I began years ago without realising my limitations, and long since abandoned. Of the ’ (Rousseau. Social Contract. 2002). For Rousseau the fundamental aim of the social contract is to establish freedom, believing that liberty was possible only where there was direct rule by the people as a whole in law making, where popular sovereignty was indivisible and inalienable.
