The Wankel engine is more commonly referred to as the “rotary engine”, because it is the most successful design of such an engine, although there are other engines that are considered rotary. completed a prototype of the type DKM rotary engine, which combined a cocoon-shaped housing with a trian-gular rotor. Dkm rotary engine

The DKM proved that the rotary engine was not just a dream. Early Wankel engines were of a design called ``drehkolbenmaschine'' (DKM) in which an inner rotating housing and rotor move around a fixed central shaft.

Ironically and contrary to popular belief, the rotary engines commonly found on cars weren’t actually derivatives of Wankel’s “Drehkolben Maschine” (DKM) model. The Wankel engine has the advantages of compact design and low weight over the more common internal combustion engine, which employs reciprocating pistons. These advantages give rotary engine applications in a variety of vehicles and devices, including automobiles, motorcycles, racing cars, aircraft, go-karts, jet skis, snowmobiles, chainsaws, and auxiliary power units. The engine that we now think of as the Wankel rotary was actually a substantial departure from Wankel’s initial early-fifties concept, the Drehkohlbenmotor (DKM, rotary-piston engine). Dubbed the DKM 54, this engine had a rotor and housing which rotated on separate axes.

This provided perfectly balanced rotary motion. Here is a historical photo In 1951, the German engineer Felix Wankel began development of the engine at NSU Motorenwerke AG, where he first conceived his rotary engine in 1954 (DKM 54, Drehkolbenmotor).

They are easy to modify, customize, and build , and you can do so pretty inexpensively to create a fast car. Rotary engines are used in a lot of pro-compact drag racing cars because they can handle an absurd amount of power.
